titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF N-ACYL-N-ALKYLAMINOMETHANDIPHOSPHONIC ACIDS
abstract Prepn. of N-acyl-N-alkylaminomethane diphosphonic acids having formula H-C(PO3H2)2-N(R1)(CO-R2), (I), (where R1 and R2 are 1-4 C alkyl) by reacting N-alkyl formamide (II) with phosphorus acid (III) and acyl chloride (IV), pref. at 40-80 degrees C. Pref. mol. ratio (I):(III):(IV) is 1:0.5:0.5 to 1:2.5:2.5. (I) are complex-formers for di- and polyvalent metal ions, e.g. Ca. (I) can be incorporated to detergent compsns. They are partic. useful for automatic bottle-washing and for tank and container cleaning. Substoichiometric quantities of (I) prevent scale-deposition in aq. systems. (I) are also used to stabilise water hardness in cooling cycles.
