titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR MULTI-STAGE DESALINATION OF SEA WATER AND EQUIPMENT FOR CARRYING OUT THE PROCESS
abstract Process for multi-stage desalination of sea water involves spraying the water onto the upper surface of a bed of compost. This is obtd. by the biological rotting or composting of organic wastes and/or clarifier sludge. The water is drawn off from the base. Sufficient stages are used to reduce the final salt content to a specified level e.g. to the minimum obtainable by this process. The compost is renewed when it is stad. with NaCl. Pref. the process should have three stages with reducing strengths from each. The adsorbent should be well ripened compost with a water content of >70%. The throughput is controlled by the residual salt content as NaCl, also taking into account the remaining carbonate and sulphate components. Used esp. to provide potable sweet water in areas where only saline water is available. Requires relatively inexpensive installation, has low energy consumption and uses a very cheap adsorbant.
