abstract | Crushed expanded clay is used as a soil improver for increasing water retention. The expanded clay absorbs large amts. of water and releases it at a slow rate. It is more resistant to the effects of wind and rain than polystyrene foam, and gives more controlled nutrient release. The expanded clay can be produced by known methods, e.g. by pelletising a suitable clay (opt. mixed with a blowing agent), heating the pellets in a rotary kiln, and crushing the resulting expanded pellets. |
