abstract | Thermosetting powder coatings are composed from (A) a graft copolymer of (a) 10-40 wt.% linear polyester having an av. Mw 600-3000 and only one ethylenic unsatd. at the end of the mol., (b) 5-30 wt.% of >=1 glycidyl ester of formula (I): (where R1 is H or Me) and (c) 10-85 wt.% of >=1 acrylate of formula (II) CH2=CP2-CO2R3 (II), (where R2 is H or Me, and R3 is 1-14C alkyl, cyclohexyl or hydroxyalkyl of formula -CH2-C(R4)HOH where R4 is H or alkyl); the graft copolymer having a softening point 70-110 degrees C. and a no. av. mol. wt. of 2000-30000 and (B) >=1 polycarboxylic acid or its anhydrite in an amt. 0.6-1.2 mol. w.r.t. carboxy gp. per mol. of glycidyl gp. in the graft copolymer. The particles have a low melt index and are free flowing giving smooth, glossy coatings with good heat, weather and solven resistance as well as good mechanical strength. |
