abstract | Benzimidazoles of formula (I) are new: (R1 = H, Cl, F, 1-6C perfluoroalkyl or-(CHZ)nCH2Z; each Z = H or halo; n = O or 1; R2 = CF3,CF2Cl or CF2H;R3 = 1-8C alkyl, 2-8C alkenyl 5-6C cycloaklyl, benzyl, phenethyl, 2-16C alkanoyl, 3-16C alkenoyl, CXNR4R4, (X = O or S; R4 is 1-4C alkyl or 2-4C alkenyl and one of them may also be H, the 2H4's contg. is not >5C or the 2 R4's can together be 2-6C linear alkylene, CO(R5)nPH (R5 = CH2,CH2CH2 or CH=CH), COQ or COR6OZ (Q = phenyl substd. by 1-3, same or different, NH2, NO2, F, CH3, R6 = 1-4C alkylene) SO2R7 R7 = 1-4C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl phenyl (opt. substd. as above) or benzyl), 2-tetrahydro-pyranil, -COXPh or -COX(1-4C alkyl)). They are prepd. e. g. by reacting corresp. N-hydroxybenzimidazole with R3Y (Y = halo). (I) are herbicides e. g. for selective use on crops of cotton, wheat, sorghum, soya etc. and can be applie pre-or, pref. post-emergence. Some are also insecticides useful in plant protection, preservation of stored goods and for domestice applications. (I) are also intermediates for other herbicides domestice applications.
