abstract Strengthening glass articles without opacifying surface by exchanging alkali metal ions from glass surface for large alkali metal ions from an ion source, esp. from a fused alkali metal salt, in an electric field, at temps. vitreous transformation point (Tg) takes place by using a cathode which consists of (1) a metal with amphoteric chemical props. or (2) of a matl. which bond alkali metal oxide formed in ion source, either directly or indirectly by means of a non-metal oxide formed from electrode material. Addn. of toxic acid gases, or etching and/or alkali metal oxide-bonding salts is unnecessary. Pref. (1) are Al.As,Au,Be,Cr,Cu, Ge,Mn,Sb,Te,Ti,U or Zn, esp. Al. Pref. (2) are SiC or graphite. Ion source is esp. fused KNO3.
