Alkyl- or cycloalkenoaniline prepn. by vapour-phase amination of alkyl- or cycloalkeno-phenol with excess NH3 in the presence of an acid catalyst of Al2O3-, Al2O3/-SiO2-, Al2O3/TiO2-, Al2O3/ZrO2-, ZrO2/SiO2 or TiO2/-SiO2-type, takes place at 360-440 degrees C under press. 5-80 bar in the presence of toluene in vol. ratio (alkyl- or cycloalkeno-phenol:toluene) of 1:0.1-1:3. Addn. of toluene as diluent suppresses by-prod. formation and improves process selectivity and conversion. Toluene content of reaction mixt. enables direct azeotropic sepn. of water formed. Recovered toluene can be recycled to reaction without loss. |
