titleOfInvention | CONVEYOR DEVICE |
abstract | A conveyor for feeding compactible powder into a controlled atmosphere system includes a tube within which rotates a shaft mounted in sealed bearing a tube having an inlet adjacent to one end and opening over the shaft, and an outlet adjacent to the other end and opening below the shaft. Carried on the shaft are two screw flights, the first having a certain pitch at the inlet end of the tube, reducing to a closer pitch in the region of the inlet opening and then reverting to the original pitch which extends to the discharge orifice; the second flight extends from the opposite end of the tube to the discharge and has a pitch reversed relative to that of the first flight. Preferably the pitch adjacent to the inlet is 1 inch and elsewhere is 2 inches; the flights and bore of the tube may be chromium plated. Feeding aluminium powder into a reactor in the production of alcohols. Packing of the powder, and penetration into bearings and seals, is prevented. The shaft (65) is supported in bearings (74) spaced from lip seals (44) and ring seals (45) by wide bore tubes (70) which retain any powder escaping through the seals. |
