titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE CONTINUOUS MANUFACTURING OF SIMPLY UNSATURATED HIGHER MOLECULAR FATTY ALCOHOLS
abstract Continuous prodn. of singly unsatd., higher fatty alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation of unsatd. higher fatty acids, or their esters with lower monohydric alcohols pref. methanol, using 50-500 fold exces of hydrogen (w.r.t. the theoretically required quantity) at 250-350 degrees C under a press. >100 atm., in the presence of pieces of a zinc-contg. catalyst having a relatively low activity, is improved in that the hydrogenation is carried out without addn. of any lower alcohol as a diluent. Higher unsatd. alcohols (8-22C) are produced in high yields. The economy of the process is considerably improved by the exclusion of any alcoholic diluent (methanol was used in the conventional process) because of the redn. of the size of appts. and energy saving (there is no need to evaporate the diluent).
