titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR PURIFYING NUCLEAR CHLORINATED ALKYLPHENOLS |
abstract | Ring -chlorinated alkylphenols (I) contg. side chain-chlorinated impurities (II) are purified by heating with an aliphatic alcohol (III) in presence of a transition metal salt (IV) at 50-140 degrees C until HCl evolution has ceased then opt. separating decompsn. products of (II) and isolating purified (I). (IV) are pref. chlorides of Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co or Ni, specifically FeCl3. (I) are disinfectants and wood preservatives, but the crude prod. is corrosive and dangerous to health because (II) releases HCl during storage. The treatment overcomes this by converting (II) to innocuous cpds. which can relatively easily be separated by distillation or, for most technical purposes, allowed to remain in the prod. |
