titleOfInvention | MAGNETIC IRON OXIDE AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING IT |
abstract | A magnetic iron oxide contg. cobalt plus, if required a bivalent metal (M), the degree of oxidn. (DO) of which is 30-80% according to the equation DO = (1 - 300-1 100-1 R) x 100 where y = Co + M in atom %; and R is the ratio of the bivalent iron ions to the total iron ions. The Co content is pref. 0.5-10 atom %, whereas the oxide is pref. needle-shaped or granular powder and may contain Mg, Cu, Cr, Mn. Ni, Zn, Mo, Sn, Sb, Te, Rn, Ba, La, Ce, W, and/or Bi, so the amt. of Co plus this element is 0.5-33 atom%. This magnetic recording material may contain a binder and be mounted on a substrate together with a dispersant, gliding medium, abrasive and/or an antistatic medium. The pref. process starts using goethite which is dehydrated and reduced to magnetite which is then oxidised at below 100 degrees C. The oxide is used in magnetic recording media. It shows stable magnetic props. and is resistant to mechanical pressure and shock. |
