abstract Prepns. for preventing sunburn contain a local anaesthetic in a concn. below that at which it exhibits anaesthetic action. The prepns. can be applied during or after exposure to the sun, before the onset of erythema; the local anaesthetics, which need not be of the type normally used topically, are used at doses far below the toxic dose. The local anaesthetic is suitably the site, falicaine, pramoxine, procaine or its salts, diperodone hydrochloride, lidocaine, dibucamine hydrochloride, fenocaine hydrochloride or acoine. The concn. is pref. 10-50% of the dose normally used for anaesthetic purposes. The prepns. are pref. formulated as ointments, emulsions or oil-based solns.
