abstract | 3-Step process for prepn. of propylene oxidn. prods. having general summation formula C3H6O (I) e.g. propylene oxide, allyl alcohol, propionaldehyde and/or acetone, takes place by (a) reacting either C2H4, O2 and ACOH or C2H2 and AcOH to form vinyl acetate, (b) catalytically converting vinyl acetate with CO and H2 to 2-acetoxypropanol (II) (c) decomposing (II) thermally or catalytically, to (I) and AcOH. Process enables (i) prepn. of (I) from raw matls. other than propylene, (ii) prepn. of (I) in one plant. Compsn. of (I) can be adjusted by working conditions and catalyst in (c), e.g. propylene oxide is obtd. with basic catalysts, whereas allyl alcohol and propionaldehyde are obtd. predominantly on working without a catalyst or with acid catalyst. |
