abstract | Prodn. of methacrolein in a gas mixt. contg. isobutyraldehyde, oxygen and an inert gas at an elevated temp. is improved in that the reaction is performed at 150-550 degrees C (pref. 170-300 degrees C) in presence of an oxidic catalyst of the Adkin's type (pref. chromite, opt. on a support) at a high volume rate. Yields are greatly increased compared with known processes (from about 10% to more than 90% w.r.t. the isobutyraldehyde). |
