The polymerisation prod. (I) is obtd. by ring opening of bicyclo (2.2.1) hept-2-ene (II) and/or its derivs. of the formulae (in which R1 and R2 are H, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or alkyl radicals including aliphatic or aromatic ether or aliphatic or aromatic alkoxy radicals) with the addn. of a catalyst (III) consisting of a component A of organometallic Li, Mg and/or Al cpd(s). of the formulae LiR, MgR2, MgRX, AlR3, AlR2X and LiAlr4 (in which R is alkyl or aryl; X is Cl, Br or alkoxy), a component B of TiCl4 and/or TiBr4 and a component C of aliphatic and/or tert. amine(s) and/or aromatic N-contg. cyclic cpd(s)., the molar ratio of B/A being 1:1-500 and/or C/A 1:2 to 10:1, and with the addn. of a mol. wt. regulator (IV) selected from acyclic monoolefins and acyclic unconjugated polyenes with 2-20C in an amt. of 0.01-100 wt.pts. (IV)/100 pts. (II) (deriv.) The mol. wt. of (I) can be regulated to give prods. of high mol. wt. useful as casting resins and prods. of low mol. wt., which can be used as paints, printing inks etc. The prod. is soluble in aromatic and naphthenic hydrocarbons and can be plasticised with aromatic and naphthenic heavy oils. |
