titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of epoxy resin esters
abstract Xylene-soluble epoxide resin ester prepn by esterifying polyglycidyl ethers of a polyhydric phenol with a monocarboxylic acid at raised temp. with release of water, is catalysed by alkylene phosphoranes having general formula R'3P-CR"R'" (I) (where R' are 6-12C aromatic hydrocarbyl and R" and R'" are 20C hydrocarbyl opt. substd by carbonyl, carboxyester or carbonamide gps or closed to a ring). Resin esters prepd from ethylenically unsatd fatty acids can be used in air-drying compsns and as starting materials for water-soluble resins, e.g. by reaction with maleic anhydride and neutralising. Resin esters contg. free OH can be used in stoving lacquers, together with aminoplasts. Resins resist storage, are prepd quickly and have low viscosity and intrinsic colour.
