abstract | Coatings and porous matls. with improved fire resistance are prepd. by (a) mixing furan resins obtd. by poly condensn. with cresol, melamine, phenol and/or urea in aq. or aq. alcoholic media with other synthetic resins and/or (in)org. additives and opt. other components and (b) curing opt. in presence of catalysts (esp. acids). Reinforcing, fillers are opt. used, and include mineral wool, glass fibres, glass fibre fabric, silica, staple fibres, carbon, boron, boron carbide or metallic fibres and/or monocrystalline filaments. The compsns. form carbon foams or stable coatings when exposed to fire; these do not burn or disintegrate and remain stable at high temp. Smoke evolution is low, and resistance to chemicals is also good. Additives are easily incorporated and cure is rapid. Esp. for thermal and ionic insulation and fire-resistant walls and coatings. |
