titleOfInvention | USE OF FLAME BLACK IN THE PARTICULATE FORM FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TOXIC GASES INSTEAD OF THE GAS MASK |
abstract | A method of using flame-produced soot or carbon black in suspended form consists of generating the carbon black by incomplete combustion of organic hydrocarbons contg. relatively little hydrogen in relation to the carbon content, and of using the resultant suspended product for adsorbing toxic gases. The carbon black may be generated immediately before use, directly in suspended form, by incomplete combustion of the organic hydrocarbons; or it may be generated in advance and then blown in finely divided form when required into the toxic zone. Pref. starting materials are hydrocarbons having a hydrogen:carbon ratio of less than 1:1. Used in place of gas masks, for example for military purposes. By distributing the adsorbent carbon black throughout a toxic zone contg. poisonous gaseS, it is possible for individuals to be protected, including full skin protection, without the need to wear gas masks. |
