titleOfInvention AZO-BIS-DIOXANES
abstract The novel azo-bis-dioxanes are of formula (I): (where R1 is H, 1-8C alkyl or phenyl; R2 is 1-8C alkyl; R3=R1). As photoiniators in the polymerisation of vinyl monomers in the presence of u.v. light, esp. when the monomers are in the form of layers >5 cm thick, pref. >10 cm thick; polymerisation is rapid, without local overheating occuring, at room temp., with u.v. light of wavelength 300-380 nm, using 0.001-1% of (I). (I) is readily sol. in the monomers, and may also be used at polymerisation temps. >180 degrees C. (I) are also useful as pore-forming agents in the prodn. of foams, N2 being split off from (I) by homolytic decompsn.
