titleOfInvention | METHOD OF DETECTING CARBON AND IRON CONTAINING CHROME CONTAINING MATERIAL |
abstract | In the dissoln. of chromiferous material contng. C and Fe at elevated temp. and pressure in aq. soln. contng. alkali, NH4+ and/or alkaline earth to give alkali chromate and/or bichromate soln. and Fe oxide pigment, the ratio of the partial pressures of CO2 and O2 (PCO2/PO2) is reduced by regulated removal of CO2 and/or introduction of O2. This ratio pref. is between 0.40 and 0.10. The starting material pref. is finely granular ferrochrome. It can be converted to chromite by calcining with Na2CO3 and C at elevated temp. Before or during dissoln., any alkaline earth, B, Al, or Si cpd. can be added which dissolves in the soln. and is then pptd. with the Fe oxide as pigment. The use of the controlled partial pressure ratio accelerates Cr6+ formation and also alloyws regulation of the pigment properties, e.g. the shade and particle size. A lower proportion of CO2 is to be avoided, since this would give rise to an explosion hazard. |
