abstract | Cephalosporins, their esters and salts have the formula (I) for the free acid: (where Z is 1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-1-pyridyl opt. substd. by one or more 1-4C-alkyl, 1-4C-alkoxy, OH, F, Cl, Br, I, NO2 and/or NH2, R is H, OCOCH3 or S-Het and Het is 3-methyl-1,2,4-thiadiazolyl-5, 5-methyl-1,3,4-oxadiazolyl-2, 5-hydroxymethyl-1,3,4-oxadiazolyl-2,5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazolyl-2- ,5-hydroxymethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazolyl-2,5-tetrazolyl, 1-methyl-5-tetrazolyl, 1,2,3-biazolyl-4, 4-methyloxazolyl-2, or 1-oxypyridino-2). (I) are antibiotics and possess 2-8 times the activity (in vivo) of cephalothine and cephalexine against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella krusei, Klebsiella pneurmoniae and other pathogens. (I) are also useful as intermediates for other antibiotics. |
