titleOfInvention LIQUID CRYSTAL COMPONENT
abstract In a cell, consisting of a liq. crystal matl. (I) between 2 plates, the surface of the plates adjacent to (I) has a coating contg. >=1 of the following F cpds.: (A) fluoroalkyl sulphonamide polymer, (B) fluoroalkyl acrylate polymer or (C) fluorinated hydroxyalkyl polymer with recurring units of formula CH2-CRgamma(COOQ) n or (D) Cr complex salt of formula (in which Q has formula (A) -(CH2)mNR2SO2Rf, (B) -CH2Rf or (C) -CH2CH(OH)CH2Rf; Rf is a linear or branched 1-21 (1-15)C fluoroalkyl gp.; R1 is H or 1-6 (1-2)C alkyl; R2 is H or 1-5(1-2)C alkyl; m is 1-5; and n is a positive integer). The (I) mols. have vertical orientation to any type of surface. High contrast results from the uniform orientation, which is stable for long periods, whilst the surface is very stable after one treatment and has no undesirable effects on (I). (I) can be of the nematic or smectic type or a mixt. of both types.
