abstract Novel alpha-haloketones (I) have formula: R-CO-C(X)(Y)-Z (where R is 1-4C alkyl opt. partly or wholly substd. by halogen, or aryl opt. substd. by halogen, NO2, OH, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or 1-4C alkyl opt. substd. partly or wholly by halogen), X is halogen, Y is H, halogen, cyano, thiocyano or 1-4C carbalkoxy, Z is cyano or thiocyano. The cpds. (I) have high activity as biocides for microorganisms, such as moulds, yeasts, bacteria, algae and are used in industrial cooling water, paper pulp, polymer, dispersions, tanning liquids or leather surfaces. R is e.g. methyl, phenyl, 4-nitrophenyl, 4-hydroxyphenyl, 2,4,6-trichloro 3-methyl phenyl, naphtyl or thienyl. Examples of (I) are alpha,alpha-diahalophenacyl thiocyanates.
