abstract Culture medium tablet comprises a water-absorbing tablet with holes of various sizes in which is disposed a swellable nutrient medium, or a swellable substance mixed with a nutrient medium which on penetration of moisture swells and ejects a stopper to provide contact between the nutrient medium and the surrounding medium. The choice of material of tablet and filling and of proportions determines the length of time after which contact is established. The tablet may be coated with test substances which determine digestive capacity, ph content, duration of moisture effect, temp., etc., or which extend the time before opening of the holes by inhibiting penetration of moisture and/or protecting against action of acid in the stomach.
