titleOfInvention PROCESS TO INCREASE THE DURABILITY OF ALKALINE-CONTAINING GLASSES, IN PARTICULAR SODIUM-CALC-SILICATE GLASSES
abstract Resistance of alkali-contg. glass to greying under Hg vapour low pressure discharge is improved by (a) contacting the glass surface, pref. for 1-100 secs., with an aq. soln. of an opt. org. Cs salt at pH 1-8, and (b) heating to =120 degrees C above vitreous transformation temp. to form a Cs ion-contg. and Na ion-depleted surface exchange layer, which prevents subsequent migration of Na ions from lower lying layers to surface. Used for soda-lime silicate glass for lamp bulbs and tubes, esp. fluorescent lamps. Amalgam formation with Na ions migrating to lamp-glass surface is prevented and service-life of clear lamp bulb or tube is increased.
