titleOfInvention PULSING DEUTERIUM-LITHIUM NUCLEAR REACTOR V
abstract The design and operation of a pulsed deuterium-tritium fusion reactor in which a low-frequency alternating current is passed through 6LiD1-xTx(10 x 1) to form a wire-type conduction channel, a high-capacitance, low-inductivity capacitor is discharged through the molten 6LiD1-xTx, the primary neutrons necessary to initiate n-6Li-T-T-2n = fission-fusion avalanches are generated by D-T fusion in the resulting plasma, and the chain reactions thus set up disintegrate as the reaction channel breaks down at the end of each current pulse, are improved as follows: (a) the alternating current has a d.c. component of sufficient magnitude to electrolytically enrich the hot 6LiD1-xTx wire electrolyte with Li in front of the cathode (forming a temporary precathode which reduces erosion of the cathode) and with D and T in front of the anode (forming a high-resistance DT-rich zone which favours the formation of primary neutrons by D-T fusion in the vicinity of the anode); (b) the cathode consists of a pool of liq. metal which is kept liq. partly by the heat of reaction and partly by external heat, and which has self-healing properties w.r.t. radiation damage and erosion losses; and (c) primary-neutron generation by D-T fusion is supplemented or replaced by nuclear fission of a neutron source (e.g. Pu-Be or Ra-Be) in the anode.
