abstract Lead is removed from fuels for internal combustion engines (esp. gasoline) by contacting the fuel with a strongly acid cation exchanger. The process can be used in cases where vehicles are fitted with exhaust gas purifiers based on noble metal catalysts (which are poisoned by Pb) and leadless gasoline is not available. The cation exchange treatment is simple and can be carried out in situ in the vehicle. The cation exchanger is pref. a hydrocarbon-insoluble resin contg. SO3H gps., esp. a sulphonated styrene-divinyl-benzene copolymer, in the form of granules, esp. spherical granules with a particle dia. of 0.1-2 mm.
