abstract Compounds of formula (I) and acid addition salts thereof are new: (R=H, alkyl or alkoxy; R'= alkyl; m and n are 2 or 3; pref. alkyl have 1-4C). Some unspecified starting materials of formula (II) (see 'Preparation') are also new. (I) are antidepressants. They potentiate the effects of phenamine or 5-hydroxytryptophan on the CNS and of adrenaline, serotonin, tryptamine etc. on the peripheral nervous system, but do not potentiate hexenal, promethol or novacaine. Their activity does not depend on monoamino-oxidase inhibition. 1-Oxo-10-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)-1H,2,3,4,5-tetrahydroazepino 3,4-- b indole (2 g) and POCl3 (10 ml) were refluxed 4 hrs., evapd. in vacuo, residue cooled and appropriate (III) recovered. This was treated with aq. ammonia, extracted with benzene, dried and evapd. to give 50% yield of (I, m=2, n=3, R=H, R'= methyl)m.pt. 138-9 degrees C (hexane).
