abstract | Prodn. of polyethylene with controlled mol. wt. distribution is carried out by polymerisation of ethylene, opt. in admixt. with propylene and/or butylene-(1), as well as in the presence of H2, and a catalyst comprising a mixt. of two transitional metal components A and B activated by an aluminium hydrocarbon cpd., the mol. ratio of A : B being 1 : 20 to 1 : 0.1, where A consists of chromium (III) acetylacetonate absorbed on silicic acid, and B consists of either (a) TiCl3 obtd. by organometallic reduction of TiCl4, or (b) liquid hydrocarbon-soluble mixts. of V and/or Ti cpds. reduced by an organometallic cpd. The mol. wt. distribution is wider, the larger the propn. of component A. The polymerisation is effected under the usual conditions for low pressure Ziegler polymerisation, e.g. pressures of 1-100 atm., pref. 10-50 atm., and temps. of 20-100 pref. 60-90 degrees C. The process yields polyethylene and copolymers with propylene and/or butylene which can be processed in high performance extruders to yield hollow articles, tubes, etc. having good stress-cract resistance, impact strength and stiffness. |
