Title cpds. important in the food, pharmaceutical, dye-stuffs, tanning, and organic chemical inds. are prepd. by reacting alpha-olefin with liq. N2O4 at 15-20 degrees and reducing electrolytically the alpha-nitratoacid so formed in a cell having a Hg cathode and a Pt anode, with a porous glass separator. The cathode may be of Sb, graphite, Nb, Ta, Pt or Ti as well as Hg, and the separator may be of acid-resistant ceramic or ion-exchange membrane, as well as glass. The yield in the electrochemical stage is 90-98% and the prod. is easily purified by conventional methods. |
