titleOfInvention METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING NAPHTHOL
abstract Title cpd. a starting matl. for may pigments and for naphthylcarbamate insecticides and an antioxidant for rubbers, can be prepd. by catalytic dehydrogenation of 1-tetralone. The present invention describes an improved process which gives less useless by-prods., better conversion efficiency, longer catalyst life (both between regenerations and in total) than previous known methods; it also avoids the use of flammable solvents. The 1-tetralone vapour, mixed with H2O vapour, is passed over the catalyst (Cr-Ni or Nikieselguhr) at 250-370 degrees, the catalyst having been pretreated with a 3-6% soln. of Na2SO4. This gives a liquid from which addn. of CCl4, trichlorethylene, or a mixt. of these ppts. 1-naphthol, which can be recryst. and unchanged 1-tetralone can be distilled for re-use. The catalyst is regenerated by passing H over it.
