abstract The energy storage capacity of an amorphous carbon electrode is increased (up to almost doubled) by (a) heating at 700-1000 degrees C under a partial vacuum, (b) subjecting to vapours of an additive including >=1 of tellurium halide, tungsten halides, sulphur halides, tungsten oxychlorides, sulphur oxychlorides, and elemental sulphur at a slightly positive press. and at a temp. between additive b.pt. and 1000 degrees C, (c) charge-discharge cycling the electrode in a fused salt electrolyte contg. >=1 alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halide with a second electrode contg. Al, esp. Al-Li alloy. The electrode is useful as a reversible positive electrode in cell as used for conditioning.
