titleOfInvention OPTICAL DIVISION FROM BETA-SQUARE BRACKETS TO 5- (5-METHYLHYDANTOIN) SQUARE BRACKETS TO PROPIONIC ACID
abstract Levulinic acid hydantoin, i.e., beta- 5-(5-methylhydantoin) -propionic acid, (I) used as auxiliary agent for resolving racemates of basic cpds. esp. dl-lysine, is itself resolved by salt formation with optically active lysine in aq. soln. Optically active (I) which is also claimed per se does not racemise and is obtd. pure and in good yields. Equimolar amts. of the reactants are used for salt-formation, and the diastereomers are obtd. by fractional crystallisation. Optically active (I) and lysine are obtd. from the aq. soln. of the salts by means of ion-exchangers contg. SO3H-gps.
