abstract | Polybutadienes with high cis-1,4-content are made by polymsn. of butadiene using a catalyst system contg. (A) an organo Al fluoride AlR3-nFn in which R = alkyl, aryl or aralkyl gp. and n is >1 and >2, and nB) a Ni or Co cpd. Prefd. Al cpds. have n = 1.2 to 1.8. Suitable Ni or Co cpds. are salts of org. acids ne.g. Ni naphthenate), salts of complex org. cpds. Co carbonyl, Ni tetracarbonyl and pi-bonded org. Ni or Co cpds. Polymsn. is carried out at -20 degrees to +150 degrees C in a liquid medium pref. in the presence of 0.01 to (6-3n)gmol water per gmol Al cpd. as activator to the catalyst system. Mol. wt. regulators such as haloalcohols, halocarboxylic acids and anhydrides, haloketones, haloaldehydes, phenols or hydroquinones may be added to control the (Mooney) viscosity. The catalyst systems are highly active and give stereoregular prods. of high mol. wt. with low gel content. |
