titleOfInvention | PROCESS FOR THE RECOVERY OF D (-) ALPHA-AMINOPHENYL ACID ACID FROM NBENZOYL-D (-) - ALPHA-AMINOPHENYL ACID |
abstract | D-(-)-alpha-aminophenyl acetic acid (I) is prepd. by electrolytic reduction of N-benzoyl-D-(-)-alpha-aminophenyl acetic acid (II) in the presence of tetra-alkyl ammonium salts, pref. tetramethylammoniumchloride at a pH of 1-7, pref. 4-6. The cathode is pref. Hg and the anode is graphite. The acidic medium is pref. acetic acid but other organic- or inorg. acids may be used and temp. if 0-25 degrees C. Anode and cathode are sepd. by a diaphragm of clay or ion-exchange membrane such as 'Permaphex A 20' (RTM). (I) is an inter. in the prepn. of antibiotic Ampicillin. The optically-active forms of (II) are easily obtainable by physical sepn. of the racemate. Debenzylation of (II) is carried out under mild conditions without large amts. of acids, giving prods. of high optical purity, which recrystallise easily. |
