abstract | New cpds. of formula (I). are prepd. by reacting a monofluorotoluene with excess Br2 at 0-200 degrees C in the presence of a halogenation catalyst (pref Fe or Al powder, I2, FeCl3, and/or AlCl3). Exclusion of light give practically pure (I), while illumination with UV light gives a mixt. of (I) and the corresp. bromomethyl derivs. The reaction is pref. effected (a) in an inlet solvent with 100-200 (esp 105-130)% of the theoretical amt. of Br2 at 40-80 degrees C, or (b) in 100-1000 (esp 150-300)% of the theoretical amt. of liq. Br2 at 20-65 degrees C in both cases at elevated pressure. |
