abstract New derivs. of formula (I): (where R1 is H, -H2PO3, or -CO-Z in which Z is 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; R2 is H or -H2PO3; Y is H, OH, 1-4C alkyl or 1-4C alkoxy; and X is H, halogen or CH3; provided that X, Y, R1 and R2 are not all H, or that R2 is not -H2PO3 when X, Y and R1 are H, or that R1 and R2 are not both -H2PO3 when X and Y are H), are useful as antiviral, antitumour and anticancer agents and as inters. for other therapeutically active agents. (I;R1 = H or -H2PO3, R2 = H) are obtd. by heating corresp. cpds. of formula (II): (where R'1 is H or -HPO3) with a chlorophosphoric acid and a carboxylic acid ester. (I; R1 = R2 = -H2PO3; Y = H) are obtd. by heating (II; R'1 = Y = H) with a chlorophosphonic acid. Cpds. corresp. to (I) in which R1 and R2 are both -CO-Z, Y is H and X is Br are obtd. by reacting 2,2'-cyclocytidene with Br2 in the presence of an anhydride of the formula: (Z-CP)2O. (I; R1 = acetyl, R2 = H) are obtd. by reacting (I;R1 = R2 = H) with glacial acetic acid. Cpds. corresp. to (I) in which X and Y are H and R1 and R2 are both -CO-Z are obtd. by catalytic redn. of corresp. cpds. in which X is Br.
