Hemiacetals of formula (Br3C-CHOH-O)nR (I) (where R is alkyl or cycloalkyl substd. by e.g. aryl, NO2, CN, OH or vinyl, or is the residue of a dihydric alcohol, and n is 1 or 2) are prepared by reacting R(OH)n with bromal (Br3CCHO) at is not >70 degrees C, pref. in an aprotic solvent (esp. tetrahydrofuran) when R(OH)n is a solid. They have marked bactericidal activity towards B.coli, Staph. aureus and the causative organisms of erypsipelis, swine and calf paratyphoid, listerellosis, cattle brucellosis and avian tuberculosis, as well as fungicidal and, in some cases, sporicidal and trichomonacidal activity. |
