titleOfInvention | NEW FLAME RESISTANT FIBERS AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME |
abstract | The fibres are made by melt-spinning a mixt. of 60-90 wt.% fusible and hardenable phenol novolak resin (A) and 10-40 wt.% fibre-forming polyamide (B) and the fibres obtd. are hardened and rendered infusible by treatment with formaldehyde in presence of an acid catalyst. The mixt. of (A) and (B) pref. has a P content of >=0.5 wt.% produced by reaction with a phosphate tri-ester (C) of formula : (in which R1, R2 and R3 are phenyl opt. substd. with alkyl or halogen) so that 0.8-1.5 equivs. of the ester gps. of (C) are reacted by ester exchange. Alternatively, the hardened infusible fibres are treated with a polyhalogen cpd. of P, S, B or Ti. The fibres are suitable for making flame-resistant heat-insulating clothing, covering for vehicles or aircraft, pyjamas, curtains, etc. and for heat- and chemical-resistant filter materials. |
