(I) and their ethylene glycol ketals (II) (where R is H, 1-3C alkoxy, OH, NO2, hal, CN, amino, carboxylcarbamoyl or sulpho, R1 is H, 1-3C alkyl, CmH(2m-p) + 1) -(R9)p; m is 1-6; R9 is OH or 1-3C, alkoxy; R2 is H or 1-3C alkoxy; R3 and R4 are each H, halogen, 1-3C alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio, NO2, CF3 amino or OH; R5 is H or ME; R6 is H or 1-3C alkyl, R7 is H, 1-3C alkyl, phenyl, 1-3C alkoxy phenyl, R8 is H or OH, or R7 and R8 are together alkylidene or oxo, n is 1-4 provided that when n is 2, R1 and R2 are Me, R is H or OH when, R4R5R6R7R8 are H, R3 must be Halgogn, 1-3C alkyl, alkoxy, or alkylthio, NO2 CF3, amino or OH and provided that when R is H or OH, or 1-3C alkoxyalkyl or alkylthio, NO2, CF3 amino or OH, R5R6R7 and R8 are H and n is 3 or 4 R2 must be H) are prepd by condensing a benzomorphan with X(CH2)2C(Y)C4H6(R3)(R4) (where Y is O or -O-CH2CH2-O) to give (I) or (II) and and opt. hydrolysing (II) to (I). Thus (II, R=OH, R1=Me R2=H, R3=4-f, R4, R5R6R7R8=H, n=3) is hydrolysed to (I).
