abstract Hypolipaemic agents contain cpds. of formula (I) R1-CX=C(CHO)R2 (where R1 and R2 are phenyl opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl, halogen and/or 1-4C alkoxy, but not both unsubtd. phenyl; X is Cl or Br). The prefd. cpds. (I) are those where X=Cl and (a) R2 = phenyl and R1 is 2-methoxy-, 3,4-dimethoxy, -4-fluoro, 3-chloro- or 3-methyl-phenyl; (b) R1 = phenyl and R2 is 4-methoxy- or 2-chloro-phenyl; and (c) R1 = 4-methoxyphenyl and R2 = 4-chlorophenyl. Cpds. (I) are pref. prepd. by reacting R1COCH2R2 or R1C=CR2 with an adduct of an N.N-disubstd. formamide and an acid halide (esp. POCl3 POBr3 or COCl2) in an anhydrous inert solvent at 20-120 degrees C and hydrolysing the products.
