abstract Prodn. of alpha,beta-unsatd. ketones of formula: R1-CH=C(R2)-CO-R3 (in which R1, R2 and R3 are opt. branched, opt. satd. aliphatic hydrocarbyl, cycloaliphatic radicals or aromatic radicals, which may be substd. with alkoxy gps.; or R2 is H; or R2 and R3 form together an alkylene bridge) by reaction between R1-CH2OH and R2 - CH2 - CO - R3 is improved in that the reaction is effected in the presence of a catalyst, in particular ZnO (pref.) and/or CdO and/or MnO in the liquid phase at 150-290 degrees C (pref. 180-280 degrees C). This method is esp. suitable for the prodn. of high mol.wt. ketones having multiple number of unsatd. bonds used as aroma agents, and valuable inters. such as pseudoionone. High yields selective w.r.t. alpha,beta-unsatd. ketones are obtd.
