abstract Within the fuel/breeder material zone, around which is the metal sheath, and along the axis is a through channel amounting to approx 50% of the volume of the zone before irradiation, and within this channel is at least 10% of the heat transmission medium which is liquid at operating temp of the sheath. The fuel/breeder material is in the form of spherical particles esp hollow pellets. The shape of the fuel/breeder material zone and of the fission gas plenum within the sheath is such that evaporated thermal transmission medium form within the hot zone condenses on the walls of the plenum and returns to the hot zone by gravity and/or capillary action. Improved thermal control prevents local overheating and melting etc of the fuel/breeder material.
