titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE ISOLATION OF TRIFLUOROACETALDEHYDE FROM FLUORINATION PRODUCTS OF CHLORAL IN THE FORM OF SEMI-ACETALS
abstract The mixts., obtd. by chloral fluorination, and contg. CF3CHO.HF and HCl are reacted with Si(OR)4 or ROH and SiCl4 to form the hemiacetal of formula:- CF3CH(OH)OR (where R is 1-5C alkyl). The HCl and SiF4 formed are driven off by heating or inert gas and the hermiacetal recovered by fractional distillation. It is a convenient storage stable and transportable form of the aldehyde which is converted to the free aldehyde by reaction with H2SO4 or polyphosphoric acid.
