O as ether linkages) are prepd. by reacting pref. 1 mole of NC-C(R1)(R2)-N=N-C(R1)(R2)-CN with 2-20 moles of HOAY in the presence of acid, esp. HCl and under anhydrous condtns. They are used as water-sol. polymsn. initiators esp. for vinyl acetate monomers, terminal halogen and hydroxy gps. being readily introduced into the oligomer produced.
