abstract Optical system; which comprises: (a) an image collimator prism comprising a lightwave conductive material, wherein the prism has a plurality of external surfaces including: a lightwave input surface and a lightwave output surface, an image display surface, and a collimator surface; (b) a source of polarized light connected to the lightwave input surface; (c) a reflective one connected to the image display surface of the prism A display device, wherein the reflective display device generates a spatial modulation of reflected light corresponding to an image, wherein the reflective display device is illuminated by light from the polarizing source reflected by the beam splitter array, wherein the reflective display device is configured such that the reflected light has a polarization rotated relative to the source of polarized light, (d) at least one retarder plate connected to at least a portion of the collimator surface; and (e) at least one lightwave collimating device that overlaps with the at least a portion of the retarder plate such that an image is selectively transmitted from the reflective display device through the polarization selective beam splitter array, is collimated by the collimating component, from the polarization selective beam splitter array is reflected and projected through the output surface.
