abstract | Carboxylic acids stereo specifically labelled in the 2- and 3-posns. with deuterium or tritrium, which are of interest in biochemistry and for study of reaction mechanisms and can also be used as intermediates in the synthesis of ether similarly labelled cpds., are produced by incubating a carboxylic acid (pref. 3-20 C) which is opt. substd. by halogen, OH and/or alkoxy anaeoribically in aq. deutreium- or tritrium-labelled medium with Clostridium- or tritium-labelled medium with clostrdium cluyveri ofr one of its mutants. The medium is pref. heavy water or tritiated water, and the incubation pref. carried out at pH 6-8, suitably at 10-50 degrees C. The procedure is applicable to a wide variety of carboxylic acids and, esp. in the case of butyric acids, gives 100% isotope exchange after relatively short incubation times. |
