titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of aqueous polymer dispersions |
abstract | Low-viscosity finishing solns. of casein or starch, suitable for use on high-speed paper making machines obtained by using as emulsifying agents for styrene/acrylic esters esters with 2 - 12C alcohols/methacrylamide copolymers a mixture of (a) a 2 - 8 mol. ethylene or propylene oxide adduct of alkylated aromatic OH-linear or branched chain-cpds., which have been sulphonated and (b) 2 - 40 mol. ethylene or propylene adducts of similar OH cpds. The monomers are emulsified in two separate lots: (A) 100 - 48 pts. wt. styrene, 0 - 52 pts. wt. butylacrylate and 0.5 - 2.5 pts. wt. methacrylamide; (B) 100 - 48 pts. butylacrylate, 0 - 52 pts. styrene and 0.5 - 2.5 pts. methacrylamide. The sum of the styrene and butylacrylate in both emulsion is 100, as is the sum of styrene or butylacrylate in (A) and (B). The emulsions are copolymerised by heating, adding equal portions alternately to a starting portion of (A) without interruption of the polymerisation conditions. The reaction is completed within 45 min - 2 hr. |
