titleOfInvention Graft polymers with high impact resistance
abstract Graft-copolymers with high impact strength and matt surface suitable for packaging when formed into panels or sheets are obtained by inorganic peroxide initiated polymerisation of a mixture of monomers contg. 18-57 mol % vinyl cyanide, the rest being vinyl aromatic monomers, in the presence of an ethylenically unsatd. rubber (I) in amounts of 0.1-1 pts.wt. per 1 pts.wt. monomers (I) being a butadiene copolymer with styrene pref. nonagglomerated contg. 15-30 wt% bound styrene a gel content of 80% pref. O, a mean particle size of 0.05-0.2 mu and a swelling index in benzene of >40. Polymerisation is carried out in aq. emulsion in presence of an anion ionic surfactant, the amount of alkali metal present in the mixture being 0.12 equiv. per kg. monomers. The mercaptan polymerisation regulator is used at 0.002-0.03 equiv. per kg monomers. Reaction temp. is kept to 45-55 degrees C until >=85 wt% of the monomers have been converted.
