titleOfInvention | Dry ice prodn - using multiple extrusion die at end of piston cylinder unit |
abstract | A method for making dry ice pellets uses a piston-cylinder unit to extrude the dry ice through a number of holes in a die at the end of the cylinder and operates as follows: (a) on the return stroke of the cylinder, liq. CO2 is evaporated by expansion into the cylinder, filling it with carbon dioxide snow, (b) in the next forward stroke of the piston the snow is cimpressed into a disc of dry ice at the entry to the die, closing the holes and sealing the cylinder from the atmosphere, (c) on the next return stroke, dry ice snow is formed in the cylinder as before, and (d) on the next forward stroke the new batch of snow forms a new dry ice pellets. In the preferred appts., the entry ends to the apertures in the extrusion die are formed so that their perimeters overlap, e.g. they are conical narrowing inlets intersecting one another, to achieve minimum resistance to the extrusion operation. |
